Eric PIDAULT: An oenologist passionate for burgundy Print E-mail

Between Paris and Lyon, the region of Burgundy, where the wine connoisseur discovers one of the richest and most complex wine-growing regions of France.  Meursault , Beaune, Vosne Romanée Vougeot, Gevrey-Chambertin ...Names that sound well to the palate.

If Eric Pidault were…

A date:
1959: an excellent year for the Burgundy

A place:
The “Château de Pommard”, near Beaune, a place circled by walls, where time stops.

A country wine: Corton Charlemagne, for its concentration.

A wine:
Clos des Lambrays millésime 1929, for its harmony.

A personality:
André Boisseaux, founder of the Patriarch Wines, a man who worked hard on the promotion of the Burgundy region.

eric_pidaultEric Pidault fell in love with the burgundian vineyards since his most tender age! Very young, Eric would pace the vines of Mercurey, take part in the harvesting, and taste the wines.

Wine : a family history

Indeed, the Pidault family has been working for the burgundian vineyards since 1856! Thus, when the time came, Eric naturally chose to study wine, oenology, at the University of Dijon and then in Beaune.
Eric seized the opportunity of having wine-growers from Napa Valley on a study trip in Burgundy to discover wine-growing in the New World. The young oenologist attended then a six-month course in a Californian winery. A fine opportunity for him to learn more about a region that favours varietal and technology.
Back in France, Eric decides to better prepare for the diversity of wines and runs a"Repaire de Bacchus"  and then works for "la Société, la Martiniquaise". Two professional experiences,  which allow him to deepen his knowledge of the French wines and their specificities.

However the family tradition catches up with him and he soon must take care of the promotion of the Château de Pierreclos, a family property. Eric resolves to implement tastings in the premises, in the superb 12th century cellars. He rejoices in the pleasure of walking again the soil of Burgundy, this mosaic of parcels, big and small, which only wait to be discovered.

To the visitors of Pierreclos, Eric talks about the history of Burgundy and has them taste these wines with such specific bouquets. With him they discover the aromas of red and black berries when the Pinot Noir is drunk young, and of white fruits or golden toasted bread with the Chardonnay.

In parallel, Eric moves on to the emergent countries: India, China, and Russia... He realizes that there are more and more consumers to appreciate that soft, velvety taste, so typical of the crus of Burgundy.

This increasing demand drives Eric Pidault today to create his own selection in «  Burgundy Wines  selection by Eric Pidault », where he selects Bourgognes of different qualities and at different prices. There can be found regional appellations (Bourgogne),  Villages appellations (Meursault, Pommard), first Crus (Santenay Maladiére premier cru) ..., grands Crus (Charmes-Chambertin) ...

And since a good wine often accompanies a good meal, Eric Pidault also offers a selection of French gastronomic products.  Here are a few wine/dish recommendations by Eric Pidault:
- Savor a goose foie gras with a Meursault- Charmes.
- Share a truffled poultry supreme with a Volnay.
